Arts & Crafts: Cultural Heritage and Future VET Opportunities
22 de abril del 2026 Tenerife Carnival Training
Every year the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes place from February to March and is considered the second most important, most popular and internationally known carnival after the one held in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1980, the Secretary of State for Tourism declared it a “Fiesta of international tourist interest”. This honorary name is given by the government to celebrations, festivals and events in Spain involving manifestations of cultural and popular tradition, with special regard to their ethnic characteristics and special importance as international tourist attractions.
For 15 years Tenerife Job Training is cooperating with European VET Educational Centres, carnival designers and associations of Tenerife craft artisans, dancing and singing associations groups, as well as with the local authorities and public institutions.
Every year we manage an average of 60 short term mobilities as a part of the Tenerife Carnival Training. Each VET school sends about ten students for a three-week placement with experienced local designers and craft associations, helping them in the costume production, make up, scenography and design processes. Some of the students help in the creation of amazing costuming of more than 400 kg weight and five meters hight. They also work together with dancing or singing groups with up to 120 people, whose costumes and fantasy make-up looks must be created the exact same way based on creative colours, textures and forms. During their tree weeks internship, participants also support the preparation of Carnival activities, help with stage decoration, accompany rehearsals and take part in the street parades that characterise the event.
